American Railroad History in a Nutshell
This Web portal offers two ways to learn about railroad history, technology, internal culture, and influence on America's popular culture. You may browse freely, using "quick search" to look at specific pictures and descriptions of interest to you. Or you may choose our summary survey of 25 images or so, "American Railroad History in a Nutshell," that hits the highlights. "Nutshell" begins with a daguerreotype (an early form of photography) of the "Tioga," a circa 1849 steam locomotive pictured above, and ends with digital images of today's massive freight operations and the widespread efforts to preserve railroad equipment and sites.
