Description:
Photographs like this one by an avid Elyria, Ohio, railroad photographer have exceptional utility for preservationists interested in both trains and the built environment. Perry Frank Johnson included abundant context in this image which was taken on an early spring day with some snow still on the ground. His caption ignores surroundings but is specific about the train: “Baltimore & Ohio 2-8-2 no. 4508 with local [train out of view to the right and heading] for the Clark Street Yard, Cleveland, at New York Central signal tower, Elyria, Ohio, 5 April 1956.” Any organization interested in preservation of such a locomotive would find this picture of inestimable value, as would preservationists interested in the wooden tower designed in the so-called stick style. Most such towers have vanished, and Elyria architectural historians would cherish a photograph like this one. And automobile buffs would seize upon the cars. A true cross-over image with broad appeal. |

Creator Description:
Perry Frank Johnson (1913-2007), a naturalist by profession in Ohio, enjoyed photographing trains. He was born December 22, 1913, in Wellington, Ontario, Canada. He graduated from Franklin College in Franklin, Indiana, with a bachelor’s degree in biology. In 1948, he moved to Elyria, Ohio, where he lived for the rest of his life. In 1961 he joined the new Lorain County Metro Parks System as its first naturalist. His job came to include editorial work and photographing the parks. The park system named the visitors center at the Sandy Ridge Reservation in his honor. In 1983, he received the Association of Interpretive Naturalists’ Pioneer Award. He retired in 1984 and led bird walks in Cascade Park for many years. |
