Description:
BNSF Railway's "Job 101" switching freight cars in a small yard in northwestern Portland, Oregon. The job, which works primarily in nearby Willbridge Yard, also provides service to the remaining customers in the Guilds Lake industrial district. The small yard in the photo, located near NW 31st Avenue and St. Helens Road, serves as the base of operations for the industrial district. These tracks were once part of BNSF predecessor Spokane, Portland & Seattle's "12th Street Switching District." That name came from the fact that the line connected to the SP&S’s Hoyt Street Yard at 12th Avenue. Even though the 12th Avenue connection was severed around 1970 and the current operations are concentrated between 28th and 35th Avenue, the old name remains a commonly-used reference. For another view of this industrial district, see record 2551. |

Creator Description:
Kyle Weismann-Yee grew up in Portland, Oregon, but took his first railroad photos while visiting Japan as a middle school student. He undertook photography more seriously upon graduation from high school in 2004, and he has gravitated towards overlooked railroad operations throughout the northwest, particularly shortlines, branchlines, and industrial switching districts. In 2008, he graduated from the University of Oregon with a degree in ethnic studies, a field he hopes to pursue in the nonprofit sector. |
