Title: Pacific Coast Shay Locomotive No. 2 Crossing Leatherbark Run in West Virginia (editor's title)
Creator: Scriptunas II, Walter
Description: Shay locomotive no. 2 crossing Leatherbark Run on the Cass Scenic Railroad State Park in West Virginia. No. 2 is a representative example of the "Pacific Coast" class of Shay locomotives built in the late 1920s, which featured extensive upgrades to better compete with the successful Willamette locomotives built in Portland, Oregon. After performing extensive repairs on several early-model Shays used on logging lines in the Pacific Northwest, the Willamette Iron and Steel Works began building their own locomotives, based on the Shay design but incorporating several key improvements, such as superheaters and welded boilers. The Willamette locomotives found a receptive market, and the Lima (Ohio) Locomotive Works, builder of nearly all Shays, scrambled to produce a more competitive model, resulting in the Pacific Coast design. Despite the improvements both models offered over earlier Shays, the market for specialized logging locomotives was shrinking as most of the country's big timber was already gone. Only 33 Willamettes and 24 Pacific Coast Shays were ever built, compared to 2,768 total Shays. For a study in Shay design, see record 2526, which presents an overview of six different logging locomotives at Cass, including five Shays.

Creator Description: Walter Scriptunas II, of Charleston, West Virginia, was introduced to operating steam locomotives when he was only two weeks old, during a family visit to the Cass Scenic Railroad State Park. He became interested in photography at age 13 and took a photo at a NASCAR race that year that was later published in one of NASCAR's national magazines. He photographed the 2009 Coke Zero 400 race at Daytona as a fully-credentialed freelancer, just a few weeks after his 18th birthday. Scriptunas has volunteered on restoration efforts at Cass since 2000, though the Mountain State Railroad & Logging Historical Association, and he currently helps coordinate their annual railfan weekends at Cass. His photos have appeared in nearly every major rail and NASCAR magazine, as well as in books, calendars, DVD cases, and publications for West Virginia State Parks & Forests. He entered the University of Charleston in 2009 as a communications major and hopes to become a professional sports photographer.
