Description:
Fireman Gary Cassell stoking the fire of Shay locomotive no. 6 during a trip on the Cass Scenic Railroad State Park in West Virginia. All of the steam locomotives at Cass burn coal and must be stoked by hand. The 11-mile run to Bald Knob climbs over 2,000 feet in elevation and one locomotive burns about 3-1/2 tons of coal. Shay no. 6, or "Big Six" as it is known at Cass, is the last and second-largest Shay ever built, incorporating all the improvements of the later "Pacific Coast" Shay design. For more about Pacific Coast Shays, see record 2531. |

Creator Description:
Walter Scriptunas II, of Charleston, West Virginia, was introduced to operating steam locomotives when he was only two weeks old, during a family visit to the Cass Scenic Railroad State Park. He became interested in photography at age 13 and took a photo at a NASCAR that year that was later published in one of NASCAR's national magazines. He photographed the 2009 Coke Zero 400 race at Daytona race as a fully-credentialed freelancer, just a few weeks after his 18th birthday. Scriptunas has volunteered on restoration efforts at Cass since 2000, though the Mountain State Railroad & Logging Historical Association, and he currently helps coordinate their annual railfan weekends at Cass. His photos have appeared in nearly every major rail and NASCAR magazine, as well as in books, calendars, DVD cases, and publications for West Virginia State Parks & Forests. He entered the University of Charleston in 2009 as a communications major and hopes to become a professional sports photographer. |
