Title: Six Locomotives in Steam at Cass, West Virginia (editor's title)
Creator: Scriptunas II, Walter
Description: Six geared locomotives, all in steam, posing with the men and women who made it possible in front of the former company store in Cass, West Virginia, for a promotional photograph on May 25, 2008. From left to right: fireman Jerry Beck and engineer Brad Hoover with Shay no. 2; conductor Gene Lambert and Drew Caloccia with Shay no. 4; shop foreman Rex Cassell with Shay no. 5; Engineer Danny Seldomridge and fireman Chris Lambert with Shay no. 6; fireman Amy Beck and engineer Dirk Caloccia with Shay no. 11; engineer Chris Waybright and boilermaker/fireman Dave Weik with Heisler no. 6. The Cass Scenic Railroad is a West Virginia State Park created in 1961 from 11 miles of former logging railroad. The Cass heritage railroad interprets the significance of logging railroads and operates one of the largest fleets of geared locomotives in the country. Its shop forces are currently working on Climax no. 10, which will give the railroad an operational example of each of the three major types of geared locomotives used in the eastern U.S., the Shay, Heisler, and Climax. In creating this photo, the photographer utilized a cherry picker to gain additional elevation while directing the crew members by radio on where to position each locomotive. The park has widely distributed the photo in its advertising and promotional campaigns, and it appears in the 2009 book Classic Steam. See record 2527 for an action view of three of these locomotives, plus additional information.

Creator Description: Walter Scriptunas II, of Charleston, West Virginia, was introduced to operating steam locomotives when he was only two weeks old, during a family visit to the Cass Scenic Railroad State Park. He became interested in photography at age 13 and took a photo at a NASCAR race that year that was later published in one of NASCAR's national magazines. He photographed the 2009 Coke Zero 400 race at Daytona as a fully-credentialed freelancer, just a few weeks after his 18th birthday. Scriptunas has volunteered on restoration efforts at Cass since 2000, though the Mountain State Railroad & Logging Historical Association, and he currently helps coordinate their annual railfan weekends at Cass. His photos have appeared in nearly every major rail and NASCAR magazine, as well as in books, calendars, DVD cases, and publications for West Virginia State Parks & Forests. He entered the University of Charleston in 2009 as a communications major and hopes to become a professional sports photographer.
