Description: Volunteer Jack Gibson in the cab of one of the Nevada State Railroad Museum locomotives in the summer of 1983. As he gazes out the cab window, Virginia & Truckee steam locomotive #25 and another volunteer are reflected in his sunglasses. At the time, the museum had just finished restoring V&T #22, the last of three V&T locomotives that it restored (two to operational service). Volunteers are indispensable to railroad preservation and Jack and his wife were long-time volunteers.

Creator Description: Shirley Burman, a photographer and photo-historian, dropped out of high school in 1952 to join the Women Marines, where she found romance, was married, and ultimately became the mother of five children. In 1972, she earned a bachelor's degree in art from the University of California, David, and began a career as a photographer and illustrator. She collaborated on the book Whistle Across the Land (1983), has created two traveling exhibits about women in railroading, and is widely published.
