Description:
New passenger diesels pulling the Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul & Pacific Railroad's Olympian Hiawatha passenger train, which ran between Chicago and Seattle/Tacoma. During the 1940s, the railroad sampled the streamlined passenger diesels of three different locomotive manufacturers. This photo shows a three unit A-B-A set of Fairbanks-Morse's 2000-h.p. diesels, dubbed "Erie-builts" because F-M subcontracted the manufacturing to General Electric's Erie, Pennsylvania plant. The locomotives sport special lettering for their assigned train. A low camera angle and dynamic sky add some drama to the classic three-quarters view of this photograph. The tonal range is excellent, with a very pleasing balance of contrast and detail. This photo appears on p. 359 of "More Classic Trains" by Arthur Dubin (Kalmbach 1974).
